Through an Australian Government scholarship initiative, Scope Global is supporting South Australian industries to fill skill shortage gaps and assisting scholarship recipients like David to gain employment after they finish their study.
After 18 years in the IT industry in South Australia, David Koukourou decided to return to study to fulfil an original goal: to become an electronic engineer.
David completed the Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering at TAFE SA, supported by a scholarship through the Commonwealth Scholarship Program for South Australia.
Through the program, David completed an internship at Fugro, a geotechnical and surveying company, and worked on their Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) system. The combination of his internship and studies led him to land employment at Simbiant, a defence technology company based in South Australia.
“As my hobby has always been working with radio control models, this is a dream job for me.”
David now works on building unmanned aerial vehicles. This role involves power design, control systems, microcontroller programming and more in the area of electronics. This proved to be a complementary match to his skills.
The Commonwealth Scholarships Program for South Australia supports undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational education and training students to complete their study and internship in South Australia. The program aims to improve employment opportunities for recipients and to provide more employment-ready graduates to priority sectors.
Scope Global is appointed by the Australian Department of Education and Training to deliver the program. Our team works to support increased employment in South Australian growth sectors, such as defence and advanced manufacturing. This year, Scope Global will place approximately 100 scholars in industry internships that are designed to enhance scholars’ study experiences, improve their employment outcomes and support industries experiencing skills shortages.
