Launched  in  early  2018,  the  Disability  Inclusion  Practice  is  powered  through  Scope  Global’s  experience  in  working  with  people  with  disabilities  throughout  Australia  and  the  Asia-Pacific  region. 

Through  the  practice  we  recognise  that  people  with  disabilities  are  experts  in  disability  inclusion.  We  then  connect  these  ‘experts’  to  the  development  and  business  worlds,  tailoring  connections  to  suit  individual  organisational  needs.

The  Disability  Inclusion  Practice  aims  to  break  down  barriers  to  inclusion  in  Australia  and  overseas  by  creating  employment  opportunities  for  people  with  disability,  while  meeting  a  growing  need  for  organisations  across  the  globe.

It  also  provides  a  vehicle  to  harness  the  breadth  of  inclusion  expertise  that  Scope  Global  has  developed  through  managing  a  diverse  portfolio  of  programs.

The  practice  offers  the  following  services:

  1. Cross-cultural  experiences  to  build  the  skills  and  confidence  of  people  with  disabilities
  2. Mentoring  platforms
  3. Culturally  sensitive  monitoring  and  evaluation  frameworks
  4. Technical  advice  and  consulting  tailored  to  organisational  needs.

Highlights  2017–18

Scope Global was  invited  to  be  a  panellist  at  the  United  Nations  Development  Program  and  United  Nations  Volunteers  Partnership  and  Engagement  meeting  in  Bonn,  Germany.  Our experts provided  subject  matter  expertise  and  input  for  the  development  of  their  new  initiative  ‘Talent  Program  for  Young  Professionals  with  a  Disability’.

This  year  we  also  finalised  an  organisation-wide  disability  inclusion  monitoring,  evaluation  and  learning  framework  for  Scope  Global.  This  audit  provides  a  baseline  of  current  disability  inclusion  knowledge,  attitudes  and  practices  for  Scope  Global  and  the  programs  we  manage  for  our  clients.  The  framework  also  sets  a  roadmap  for  advancing  greater  inclusion  throughout  our  operations  in  Australia,  Asia  and  the  Pacific.

Case Study: Skills program transforms Sione’s art and life Profile: Sione Te’e

Sione Te’e was one of the first people living with a disability to join a training activity in the Tonga Skills program. At the time of his first training he was a part-time carver at the Tonga National Youth Congress Virgin Oil Project, carving coconut shells that were sold at the project site.

Sione, who is in a wheelchair as the result of an accident, was recommended from local association NATA to join a Mabe Pearl Carving Training. His first training was so successful he was able to make new products with different designs. His employers were so impressed with his improved productivity and product quality that they more than doubled his wage for the three days he worked at the site. Sione was also able to start making products at home, which provided additional income.

In February 2018, Tropical Cyclone Gita destroyed the Virgin Oil Building and Sione and another four people in wheelchairs were laid off until the building was reconstructed.

Sione then attended two other trainings funded by Tonga Skills. As a result of the training, Sione produced a piece that will be showcased in the Royal Academy Oceania Exhibition in London. He has also expanded his skills in textiles, printing and picture making.

The skills Sione has learned this year through Tonga Skills have transformed his art and opportunities on multiple levels. Sione now earns five times the amount he earned this time last year and has since trained one of his former colleagues, who is also a person in a wheelchair.

Sri Lanka: Kanchana’s a Supreme Chef

Kanchana did not let her hearing difficulties stop her from signing up for the Supreme Chef contest. After being selected in the first round out of a competitive public audition in Ampara, and then consecutive rounds out of at least 55 contestants, Kanchana made it to the final 20 selected trainees for the competition series.

During the auditions, Kanchana consistently showed her zest and interest in cookery skills and was not intimidated by an audience or judges. Skills for Inclusive Growth paired Kanchana with a sign language interpreter throughout the competition so she had equal and fair access.

During the competition, Kanchana’s cooking skills were highly rated and she progressed through the competition. In a recent cooking demonstration with world-famous chef and restaurateur Peter Kuruvita, she was regarded highly for her cooking skills.

Kanchana displays determination, dedication and curiosity with a great interest in cooking.
